Hi RDs! I am 5'1, weigh roughly 122 lbs and I/m trying to get down to 110. I am slightly anemic, and chronic aches and pains, and I'm always freezing. I want to know what supplements you would suggest given the information.

Answer:

We would definitely need more information from you to give you an accurate and complete recommendation. It seems like you may have an underlying condition and I suggest you explore the symptoms you’re having. Hopefully you’re working with your doctor to correct the anemia. Our clinical nutritionist, Gay Riley, specializes in women’s health and you can contact her at gay@netnutritionist.net or 800-692-9711.

In the meantime, I recommend a complete multivitamin and mineral formula to help you get all the essential nutrients required for good health that most people miss through food alone. We have several, and if you’re exercising, go with the ActiveMV.

If you’re not getting approximately 1,000 mg/day of calcium by eating calcium rich foods, you may want to consider a supplement to support your bone health.

Vitamin D is also important and you should have your levels tested since the majority of the U.S. population is deficient.

I encourage you to consume at least 8 ounces of fatty fish weekly like salmon, tuna and mackerel to get the essential omega 3 fats our bodies need to support optimal health. A fish oil supplement can help you meet your needs.

Finally, as you reduce your calories and increase your activity levels to achieve your weight loss goals, you will need and benefit from increasing your protein intake to .7 to 1.0 grams per pound of your weight – which means 85-122 g/day. This will help preserve your muscle tissue, manage hunger levels and more. Plus – research shows that people who use 1-2 protein rich meal replacement shakes in place of 1-2 meals/snacks a day lose significantly more weight and maintain the weight loss better than those we don’t use them. We have a shake formulated for weight loss, called the LeanMR, which is also high in fiber to help manage hunger.

Be sure to check out the symptoms you’re having with our clinical nutritionist or your doctor. Addressing them will not only support your overall health, but also your weight loss goals.
